Lift and Shift for food plants: Safe, Hygienic, and On Time

Lift and Shift for food plants: safe, hygienic, and on time

Reorganising a line, swapping a filler, or moving a whole cell across the hall – it’s all doable without derailing production. Here’s how we plan and deliver machine moves that protect hygiene, hit windows, and hand back the kit ready for audit.

What a good relocation looks like (in practice)

  • End-to-end delivery, including disconnection, move, reinstatement, and recommissioning, handled by a single team (mechanical, electrical, and controls).
  • Hygiene-first – zoned PPE/gowning, temporary containment, HEPA where needed, validated clean-downs.
  • Compliant lifting/isolations – RAMS and lift plans; PUWER/LOLER kit and supervision; CDM 2015 where thresholds apply.
  • On your clock – weekends, overnights, low-volume shifts, and shutdowns with multi-crew options for parallel moves.

The simple plan we use most weeks

  1. Survey and scope
Space checks, services, access routes, weight/centre-of-gravity, hygiene constraints.
  2. Paperwork that stands up
RAMS, lifting plans, permits, isolations, and disconnection marks. Hygiene and safety packs aligned to site rules.
  3. Lift and Shift
Skates, gantries, forklifts or cranes; stainless fixings and sealed conduits where required. Controlled mechanical/electrical disconnection and re-fit.
  4. Re-establish & validate
Alignment and levelling; utilities re-tie; electrical continuity/insulation/I-O; motor/drive tests; functional checks and production sign-off. As-built docs updated.

High-care moves: hygiene controls that actually work

  • Zoned PPE and gowning
  • Temporary barriers and HEPA air control (as needed)
  • Chemical-resistant cabling and sealed containment
  • Tool/waste segregation and validated pre-/post-clean
All delivered to site standards and customer audit expectations (BRCGS/IFS).

Scheduling without stopping output

  • Weekend/overnight installs
  • Phased works during low-volume shifts
  • “Temporary keeps-you-running” utilities where sensible
  • Multi-crew setups for parallel assets
We plan with production, hygiene, and engineering to ensure that changeovers don’t steal capacity.

Lifting and handling – by the book

Skates, gantries, jacks, forklifts and cranes as the job demands – all kit certified, all lifts risk-assessed and supervised. PUWER/LOLER compliance. CDM 2015 applied when thresholds are met (we can act as Principal Contractor).

Common traps – and how to dodge them

  • Trap: “We’ll sort it all in the shutdown.”
Better: Pre-stage disconnections and off-line prep so shutdowns are for reinstatement and validation only.
  • Trap: Splitting trades across three contractors.
Better: One joined-up M&E/controls team to cut handover risk and speed fault-finding.
  • Trap: Hygiene as an afterthought.
Better: Include containment, gowning, and validated cleaning in the RAMS, not the toolbox chat.

Timings, budgets, and seasonality (so you can plan)

  • Typical duration: single-machine moves in 1–2 shifts; full-line moves 2–5 days with phased install.
  • Typical budgets: full-line relocations often start £5k–£20k+, depending on hygiene scope and M&E complexity.
  • Q4 peak: book 6–8 weeks ahead where possible; we hold limited emergency slots.

Handover you can trust

You’ll receive mechanical safety checks, electrical test results (including continuity, IR, and I/O), motor/drive tests, functional sign-off, and updated as-builts; all ready for audit.

FAQs

How long does a typical lift and shift move take?
Single assets: 1–2 shifts. Full lines: 2–5 days with phased install.

Can you work without stopping production?
Yes, we plan around nights, weekends and low-volume windows and use temporary utilities where needed.

What does “audit-ready” mean in practice?
Documented tests, alarm/IO checks where relevant, and as-built drawings to support site audits.

Does CDM 2015 apply to high-care moves?
Yes, if thresholds are met (e.g. duration or multi-contractor work). We can act as the Principal Contractor and manage documentation.

How soon should we book Q4 works?
6–8 weeks ahead is sensible; we’ll advise on capacity and staging.
